With EMDI shared database, several PCs work on the same local Firebird database over a secure connection via WireGuard. The PC that hosts the database acts as the server. Other PCs connect as clients and see the database in their company list like a normal local installation.
On first use, EMDI installs the access software (WireGuard) automatically if it is missing. You need an EMDI license on each PC, a VAT ID in business details in Settings, and on the server PC the Firebird database must be running locally.
Server – sharing your database
Open Settings → Usage tab. Click Start shared database use. You will be asked for a connection type:
- Local → local — makes the database available to other PCs on your network (LAN / remote access via WireGuard).
- Local → EMDI Web — connects the local database to the EMDI Web service (as before), for access from the web client.
When starting, EMDI configures the firewall for the Firebird port (3050) only for WireGuard, registers the database on the SBZ server, and brings up the connection.
While the server is running, the button becomes Stop shared database use.
The same PC cannot simultaneously be server and shared-database client. If it is already connected as a client, disconnect first from the company list.
Client – connecting to a shared database
On the login screen (options), next to the company list, click the edit-companies button. At the top of the list click Add shared database. Enter the EMDI server license – the license key of the PC running as server, not your own key.
EMDI looks up the database, tries a direct connection and, if needed, routing via the SBZ server. After a successful connection, a new row is added to the company list.
You can log in normally by selecting that company.
The success message shows whether the link is direct or via server and approximate response time (ms). To disconnect, use Add shared database again – the button becomes Disconnect shared database (with route hint while connected).
If the shared-database server is already active on the same PC, client connection is blocked. Stop the server from Settings first.
Route indicator and compression
When you are connected to a remote shared database and open Settings → Usage, a direct or via server label with response time appears next to the database path. The Database library field shows which fbclient.dll the application loaded.
Optionally, next to the database path you can enable Data transfer compression for faster data transfer over remote connections.
Note:
If connection fails, check that the server is running, the license key is correct, VAT ID is filled in Settings, and the firewall allows the connection.
